Chelsea will be well aware of Leicester City’s attacking threat ahead of the FA Cup final but John Terry believes the Foxes also possess the Premier League’s most ‘underrated’ player in defence.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have the chance to secure their first trophy of the season on Saturday afternoon as they face Brendan Rodgers’ men in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
The match is set up to be a fascinating tactical battle as both Rodgers and Tuchel have favoured a three-man defence this season.
Wesley Fofana has made an instant impact at the back for Leicester following his £36.5 million move from Saint-Etienne last October, while Caglar Soyuncu has offered a solid presence since overcoming his injury troubles earlier this season.
But Terry has identified Jonny Evans as Leicester’s key man in defence following his series of consistent performances for Rodgers’ side.
During Leicester’s victory over West Brom last month, Terry took to Instagram to praise Evans as the former Chelsea captain wrote: ‘How good is Jonny Evans. The most underrated defender in the Premier League.’
Leicester, however, are sweating over the fitness of Evans ahead of their final against Chelsea.
The former Manchester United defender has missed Leicester’s last two Premier League games due to a heel injury, but Rodgers is ‘hopeful’ that the 33-year-old will be fit enough to feature at Wembley.
‘We’ll give him another day, he’s progressed really well in this last 24 hours,’ Rodgers said on Friday.
‘He was outside today and he looked really good. We’ll see what the reaction is after that and then we’ll make a final decision on that tomorrow, but we’re really hopeful.
‘It’s just a discussion between myself and Jonny. Ultimately, you’ve always got to speak to the players. Jonny’s a warrior, so I know if there’s any way he can play, even if he’s not 100 per cent, he’ll be out there.
‘I always have to balance that off. It’s a huge game, it’s going to be a physical game, so we need physicality in the team and running ability.
‘If that’s hindered in any way, it might make it difficult for him, but we’ve got 24 hours, so we’ll see how he goes.’
