Heidi Montag has revealed the heartbreaking ultimatum she was given by Lauren Conrad while filming the iconic TV show The Hills.
Cast your mind back to the early 2000s, a time when low-rise jeans and thick side-fringes reigned supreme.
Reality show The Hills – one of the first of its kind – followed the lives of teenagers as they tried to make it in Los Angeles after finishing high school.
But it was the epic fallout between stars Heidi and Lauren that had us all utterly hooked, the once strong relationship completely falling apart on our TV screens.
Ahead of the new season of The Hills: New Beginnings, Heidi and Spencer Pratt discussed the unforgettable friendship breakup.
‘For me, it was really challenging because I really loved Lauren, that was my best friend, I had her back and I was a really good friend to her,’ Heidi told Metro.co.uk and other press.
‘And then the first opportunity she got when she didn’t have a boyfriend, she was critical of me and gave me the ultimatum: “Hey you’re either going to stop dating Spencer or you’re off the show”.’
It was clear to viewers at the time that Lauren and Spencer didn’t get along, and there were even rumours of Spencer releasing Lauren’s sex tape.
Despite this, Heidi wishes she could go back in time to get more off of her chest.
‘It was really hard for me at that point because I was like, “Wow, I didn’t think you’d even be that way. You were just with a boyfriend I didn’t like and it was my job to support you.” So I would have told her more of this when the show aired but [I felt like I couldn’t] because it was her narrative.’
Who can forget the iconic scene where Heidi went to visit Lauren in her apartment, in hopes to repair things? It was here that Lauren gave us the immortal words: ‘He’s a sucky person.’
This escalated into the even more iconic: ‘I want to forgive you…and I want to forget you.’
Understandably, Heidi doesn’t look back at this moment too fondly.
‘The last time I saw Lauren I would have just said a few more things.
‘I would have sat down and said “What are you doing, are you serious right now? You’re really ending our friendship for a show because you don’t like my boyfriend being on your show?”‘ Heidi – who has been married to Spencer since 2008 – explained.
‘I had a few more things I could say to her. It was just really challenging as there were a lot of older adults around me who were protective of her and judging me, bossing me around and treating me badly.
‘It was really hard going into enemy territories, which is what it felt like and not being welcomed by the production team or her. I just wish I could have advocated for myself a bit more, which was hard.’
Lauren, the original main star of The Hills, does not appear in the reboot alongside Heidi and Spencer, Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner and Whitney Port.
