Ruby Rose says Vanquish reminded her of her own mum

Ruby Rose says her new role in Vanquish reminded her of life growing up with her own mum, who had her a young age and ‘would do anything’ for her.

In the George Gallo-directed film, the actor plays Victoria, a mum forced to return to her dark past as a Russian drug courier when her daughter is held hostage by retired police officer Damon (Morgan Freeman).

The Australian star said Victoria’s drive to protect her child was similar to her mother’s and she enjoyed playing the character’s ‘reluctance’ to go back to her old ways.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘I really looked at my mum, who was a young mum and had me when she was 20, so it’s the same age difference between that and me and my on screen daughter.

‘I thought this was a story about a mother that would do anything for her daughter. That’s very real to me because I know that my mum did, and would do anything for me, especially when I was growing up.

‘I loved that, and the reluctance and the pain of having to go into every situation. Even though she might kick butt in a room, and she might own the room and get what she came for, she’s never like, “Yeah [wipes sweat]”, there’s this reluctance.’

Ruby, 35, also shared that she doesn’t get worried about being typecast in butt-kicking action hero roles as she loves the genre, but chooses the parts she plays very carefully.

‘As an actor I want to be able to play as many different characters in as many different life situations as possible,’ she told us.

‘I really enjoy action, it’s a genre I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. I’m a very physical person – boxing and a lot of martial arts stuff. All the Australian adrenaline things!

‘I definitely go through action scripts in that genre very differently to every other kind of script. I get what the character’s doing, what is their motivation, what is the story trying to tell you?

‘I do wanna do some films where I’m not just killing people.’

Vanquish is out on Premium Digital Platforms from May 28.
