Joe Willock dropped a hint over his future after scoring the winning goal in Newcastle’s victory over Sheffied United, maintaining his incredible purple patch in the process.
The England Under-21 international was sent out on loan in January by Arsenal in order to secure the Hale End Graduate regular Premier League football.
Willock impressed in the group stages of the Europa League for his parent club earlier in the campaign, but has taken his game to another level since moving to St James’ Park.
The midfielder’s emphatic header proved to be the decisive moment in last night’s win against the rock bottom Blades and Willock set a Premier League record in the process, becoming the youngest player in the competition’s history to score in six successive matches.
During his post match interview Newcastle fans were overheard begging Willock to stay and the 21-year-old gave an indication of his mindset by pointing out the need for the Magpies to push on next season.
He said: ‘The manager said before the game, our objective is to surpass what we did last season.
‘We always want to get better. I feel like, with this team, Newcastle, we’re a massive club. The fans are brilliant. The stadium is brilliant. I feel like we need to aim for more. Our objective is to push for more.
‘I feel like getting an extra point than we did last year is a step forward. I feel like next year we need to push on, as well.’
Addressing his future directly, meanwhile, Willock added: ‘To be honest with you, I haven’t thought about it.
‘I’m just trying to focus on what I need to do for the rest of the season. When the time comes I’m going to have the conversation with my father, my agent and see what happens.’
