Dr Hilary had an outburst of frustration on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain about people booking foreign holidays amid concerns about the Indian variant of Covid-19.
The doctor described it as ‘dangerous’ to go abroad, even if you’ve had both doses of the vaccine, as you would be mixing with people from different countries at the airport and on the plane.
He also praised Australia for clear rules about flying abroad with the people of Australia stuck to.
It came during a tense exchange with host Susanna Reid who argued that if you have had the vaccine it should be alright to go on holiday abroad to places that have had a successful vaccine rollout.
He said: ‘It’s dangerous in the airport, it’s dangerous on the plane and it’s dangerous in the country you’re going to. As a doctor I have to ask the question, is a holiday really important and essential in a global pandemic. It really isn’t. It’s a luxury. It’s something that you can do without in order to preserve life.’
Susanna replied: ‘There’ll be a lot of NHS workers who feel like they deserve a holiday.’
When Adil argued they could go on holiday in the UK, Susanna told him that UK breaks are more expensive because of the increased demand.
His co-host argued that people are being ‘guilt-tripped’ about their summer holiday which isn’t ‘a healthy thing to do’.
‘You give us the green light to go away, and then you tell us actually it’s too dangerous to go away so now, Dr Hilary, you’re putting all onus on the individual…’ she went on.
Dr Hilary said: ‘I have to admire the Australians. They said no travel for anybody until March of next year. That’s why they have no Covid there. That’s why they can go to concerts, go to cinemas, theatres, and enjoy a normal life becuase they’ve been strict. Because they’ve said, “That is what we’re going to do” and people say, “We accept that”.
‘Here, not only do we have confusing rules and regulations and guilt trip people, but people don’t know what’s the right thing to do. They’re not isolating. They’re not quarantining.’
As the lockdown restrictions continue to ease in England, Dr Hilary previously remained cautious about eating at indoor hospitality venues.
Asked on Tuesday if he would go for dinner indoors, he shared: ‘I would if there was a lot of space inside. I wouldn’t be rushing to do it and I wouldn’t be doing it too often.’
