An elderly woman in India woke up just before she was going to be burned alive after her family mistakenly thought she was dead.
Shakuntala Gaikwad, 76, was believed to have died from coronavirus so her family prepared her for cremation.
She tested positive for Covid-19, and after her condition deteriorated on May 10 her family took her to Silver Jubilee Hospital in Baramati, Yahoo News reported.
But they could not secure a bed for her because all the wards were full due to the spiralling pandemic in the country.
They waited outside for an ambulance to take Shakuntala to another hospital, but she fell unconscious.
Her family thought she had died so prepared her body – and moments before it was going to be lit Shakuntala woke up on her own funeral bier.
Local media reported she started to cry and panic.
Police officer Santosh Gaikwad confirmed the incident had taken place.
Silver Jubilee Hospital founder Dr Sadanand Kale revealed Shakuntala had been taken back to the hospital for further treatment.
Her current condition is not known.
It comes as India continues to battle a devastating second wave of Covid-19.
The country reported record-breaking numbers of new cases and deaths at the beginning of the month, and numbers remain high.
People are struggling to find hospital beds, oxygen and medical treatment as the country attempts to contain the spread of the virus.
Delhi ministers announced at the weekend they are extending the region’s strict lockdown for at least another week.
India has seen more than 25 million cases and 275,000 deaths during the pandemic so far, but experts believe these figures could be five or even 10 times higher.
