Bernice Blackstock makes an empathic return to Emmerdale next week, and there’s one thing about her that will be quite different.
The popular character will very much be the same in comparison to how she was when she left the ITV soap, reveals actress Samantha Giles, but viewers might notice a minor change in her physical appearance.
‘I’ve got very very thick, wiry frizzy hair!,’ the star explained to Metro.co.uk, ‘I can’t do it myself.
‘I just can’t do it!
Due to Covid restrictions, actors now have to do their own hair and make-up – something which Samantha described as a ‘nightmare’.
‘Obviously Bernice is a hairdresser,’ said the actress, ‘so she is not going to be seen looking anything less than having her coiffed look, if you like!
Therefore, in order to re-create Bernice’s signature look, Samantha opted for a wig.
‘We’ve got this wig – which is a pretty good wig!,’ the soap star told us. ‘But obviously, I’ve got someone on the other end of the monitor going: “Can you tell Sam to brush the wig and to move these bits!”
‘So, that has all been really hard!
‘And we have to do everything, basically,’ she added, ‘all our own props, the costumes – nobody can touch us. So, you’ve got somebody saying to you: “Can you tie the belt this way?’
Speaking about what viewers can expect upon her return, Samantha warned that Bernice is willing to fight for Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) – who has forged a dangerous partnership with Kim Tate (Claire King) in the wake of her pregnancy.
She said: ‘Bernice knows about the pregnancy I believe, but obviously it’s the shock seeing her daughter – that this is her first born and now she’s pregnancy.
‘And the connection with the Tates – Bernice is not going to let Gabby remain in the clutches of the Tates and Home Farm. She wants to make a stand for her daughter.’
