A reader lists some recent and upcoming games he’d loved to play, from Demon’s Souls to Deathloop and explains why probably never will.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Why I want to play
The main reason I want to try this game is to explore our fair English Isles during a historical setting. Especially the City of York (Jorvik in the game I believe, which is what the Vikings called it). As someone who lives in Leeds, myself and my wife often visit York.
I also used to work in the city so to wander around the city in a video game would be pretty cool. In addition. the game looks damn impressive graphically. Also, who doesn’t like Vikings?
Why I probably won’t play it
Simply put, the main barrier to playing the game is the length. I often struggle with large open world games at the best of times and my understanding is that Assassin’s Creed games are often particularly bloated. I don’t know if I have the time to sink 100 hours into a game when I’ve never engaged with the franchise in the past. If I knew I could access the Jorvik area from early in the game I might give it a whirl, but I highly suspect it’s a later stage in the game.
Deathloop
Why I want to play
It looks visually striking, like previous Arkane games such as Dishonored it seems to have a unique art style. Also, there aren’t many PlayStation 5 exclusives with confirmed releases this year that interest me, other than Ratchet & Clank, but unless that gets stellar reviews I’ll wait until it drops from £70.
Why I probably won’t play it
I’ve never much got into Arkane games. I played some Dishonored 2 but although I could see it was well made, I just wasn’t any good at it. I really seem to struggle with stealth-based games, especially those in first person. Initially the first few trailers seemed to suggest Deathloop would be more action-oriented. However more recent previews have led me to believe this might not be the case and there might be an emphasis on stealth after all.
[This feature was submitted before the recent Deathloop preview, which does suggest the game is more action-oriented, even though stealth is still a factor – GC]
Horizon Forbidden West
Why I want to play it
It looks absolutely stunning and in a year that could prove to be underwhelming, one of the few true AAA games during a period when Sony seems to be constantly delivering great exclusive games. Its predecessor is often said by many to be one of the standout titles of the PlayStation 4 era.
Why I probably won’t play it
So far I’ve not really clicked with the first game. I suspect some of that reason is again due to stealth but there’s other aspects also. The landscape seems a bit lifeless and dull and I’ve not taken to the combat particularly either. The trailer for the new games seems to suggest to myself at least a more varied and lush, vibrant setting. I’m gonna have another crack at the first game, since it’s been given away for free at the moment. Hopefully, I might engage more with it this time but unless that’s the case I can’t see the sequel straying too far from what the first game has to offer.
Bloodborne/Demon’s Souls
Why I want to play
Slight cheat on this one. Initially I had this list in mind before I’d played either game but I’ve actually since bought Demon’s Souls for £30, bargain! I’ve still yet to try Bloodborne however.
So why do I want to play? Well simply put, to see what the fuss is about. Both games are consistently referred to as ‘must play’ and the ultimate tests of gaming skill. And in the case of Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5 one of the few true next gen experiences.
Why I probably won’t play
As previously mentioned, I’ve played Demon’s Souls but am unlikely to complete the game. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy the game. It looks amazing, the sound design especially with the 3D audio via my wireless headphones is exceptional. I also enjoy the combat.
However, frankly I’m still struggling. At the moment I’ve clocked in at four hours gameplay and am only at the third fog door on the first level, but know that any mistake will bring me back to the beginning again. I’ve been playing it in short bursts alongside other games. I know I should probably put all my efforts into it but if I still can’t progress I might feel like I’ve wasted my time.
I think if the save system was more accommodating I could deal with dying lots. I’ve heard that Bloodborne is better in this respect, but is also considered the harder game and also longer. Getting battered for a 10-20 hour game is bad enough but not for double this amount of time.
